HERE WE GO : ES GEHT LOS!
Making Comics. My first book is almost finished. A journey almost at its end.
Attention: the english version is further down below!

ENGLISH VERSION
Here we go!
I guess it's time to introduce myself to the Substack community. I'm Jan Bintakies, the comic artist. It took me many years to muster the conviction to call myself that. Once it was graphic designer, for many years illustrator and now: Comic artist!
I have always been a comic artist. When I was eight, I watched the old black and white movie King Kong and the next thing I did was retell it all in pictures and text. It's always been a special thing to me. For me, it's magic when drawings come to life when words are added; almost as if they were magic formulas that first turn the lifeless golem into a menacing creature with substance. That enthusiasm has always been there. I've always kind of made comics, invented them in my head, and wanted so much to finally be: a comic artist.

But for a long time, that wasn't me according to my eyes. I've been working as a draftsman for 20 years, but the holy grail of my own comic book I didn't ... dare? Was I not ready? Were my drawings not good enough, or the right project not there yet? Did I need to develop the right style first? It took a long time. As I type this text (and I should be coloring), I'm 46 years old. Fortunately, illustrators mature like good wine. We get better with time.
Six years ago I met Matze Ross. It was a coincidental meeting at a wedding. He is an author, I am an artist. It was comic love at first sight. And since then, we've been stuck with each other in this adventure called "One Damned Handshake", tightly entwined by fate. Our quest is pursued in the name of "Splitter", the faithful publisher at our side.
Let me make it short. For the past 6 years, I have been on an odyssey. I have learned so many things by doing wrong and doing right. I have allowed myself to be unsettled. I have grown and honed my skills. I imagined I had to relearn anatomy, gesture drawing, character design, storyboarding - all of it. I wasted time, but I also gave myself time to mature and grow. I'm grateful for that time. It's been good for our comic. This year it will be finished.
This page that generates this newsletter is to keep all of you out there up to date on what's happening in my little comic bubble. I'll try not to be annoying, and keep my posts focused on what's essential and important. I want to tell you about my projects - mainly about my comic. Then, when it gets going with readings and signings and conventions, you'll hear about it here. This year will hopefully be loud and turbulent. There will be a lot of posts from me, because hopefully a lot will happen.
But first, it's going to be quiet for a bit. The damned handshake is not finished yet. I still have over 50 pages to color. I'm focusing on the finish line and balancing my energy. Social media is throttled at the moment. But I'll have to get back to it eventually. And then, hopefully, I'll be fully visible.
I want to thank you, dear reader*, from the bottom of my heart! You have registered on another obscure platform. You created another account, and now you have to remember another password in your life. And you did this because my work interests you. I thank you for that! I will try not to disappoint you. I am very happy that you will be with me on this journey 😊
So much flowery words, but that's just how it comes out of me. See you soon, you lovely nerds <3
