Es will in eure Hände.

Lasst uns am besten gemeinsam herausfinden, was funktioniert.

Newsletter April 2023 [english]
"One Damned handshake" is completed after six years
Spring is coming. New life sprouts from the ground and our world finally becomes colorful again. I've done it. 'One Damned Handshake' is finally finished. After six years of development, our comic debut is finally complete. In 152 pages, Matze Ross and I tell an action-packed story about the likeable loser Luca Stoffels, who accidentally sells his soul to the demon Faffnir. The german version of the book will be published by Splitter this year.
For me, this is a lifelong dream come true. I put a lot of energy and love into this project. I wanted to show you what I can do, what I love, what I can be. I learned a lot, about comics, about myself, about limits and deprivation. I made a lot of mistakes. That's all a good thing.
"'One Damned Handshake' contains so much of what I've always wanted to portray. It has humor and is self-ironic. It's fast-paced, dynamic, and at times ridiculously over-the-top brutal. It wanders through many worlds and their respective individual aesthetics. I was allowed to come up with demons, draw latex-clad fetishists, depict the lovingly insane Cologne Carnival, and populate our world with black mages and big city crooks. A lot of it was already inside me and wanted to get out. It was an absolute stroke of luck that Matz's story checked off so many boxes on my mental creative checklist.
And now our book is ready. It wants to be in your hands. It wants to be read. I am so eager to see how it will appear to you. Will it come to life under your gaze? Will wriggling tentacles unfold, will blood spurt, will you laugh? Will it entertain you? If we ever meet, tell me about it! It will mean a lot to me.
Kickstarter for the Demonic Deluxe Edition
Right now, the Kickstarter campaign for the German Demonic Deluxe Edition is in full swing. After only 38 hours we have reached our funding goal, and are already heading for the numerous stretchgoals. Among them are refinements of the book, bonus pages and goodies like bookmarks and art prints! This version is not something for collectors and enthusiasts, it is also the unique opportunity to support Matze and me directly. As a premium version you can even buy original pages from me! So be sure to check it out, and share the link with everyone who's interested!
This Newsletter
I have thought about a little structure for my monthly newsletter. Best let's figure out together what works best. I'll start with the red hot current news, and what's going on most intensively in my creative existence right now. But after that, I thought I'd always share a few pop culture finds that particularly touched me.
The soundtrack of banging colors
When I'm working, I listen to podcasts when I need voices around me. However, it's much more common that I need to focus and prefer to listen to music because it requires less imagination. I am one of those people who can listen to a song or album to death. There are actually albums that have become so etched in my mind that they are inseparable from the life events during which I heard them. While coloring the damned handshake, "Veil of imagination" by Wilderun was my acoustic companion. Melodic and bombastic, this Dan Swano produced progressive metal album comes across. It is as brute as it is intricate. You have to dig in, I guess, but then you don't want to leave for a while. For me, it was an ideal habitat for my demonic finale, and at the same time awakened the blissful nostalgia of my early socialization with nineties heavy metal.
Comic reading
I also read some great comics. "Wuthering Heights" the comic adaptation of Emily Bronté's novel of the same name. Edith drew it, Yann is the scenarist. The book is published in this country by my house publisher Splitter. I was particularly taken with how well the story is told. There are many good stories out there in the comics world, but some realizations make it hard for me to consume elegantly and immersively. As a comic artist and storyteller, I pay close attention to form, and am pleased when a comic narrative works smoothly. The reader's eye tracking, the balance between image and text, the compositions within the panels, the rhythm of the narrative structure, the distinguished character design, and the balanced level of detail - all work beautifully here. Thanks to this graphic novel, I was able to fill an educational gap. "Wuthering Heights" has enriched me greatly.
And what else?
By the way, this book was recommended to me by the great Katinka Kornacker, whose outstanding comic store, the "Comix" in Hannover, celebrates its 20th anniversary on May 6! Numerous well-known comic artists* will be on hand for signings. I'm really looking forward to the event! Unfortunately our comic wasn't finished in time, otherwise I would have been allowed to join the lineup.
You'll read from me again in May. Until then, there will be little updates on my Instagram channel. Have a good time until then!
